The reinvigorated southwest monsoon fuelled by the strong westerlies continued to lash Kerala, disrupting normal life in many parts of the State especially in central and northern Kerala, on Monday (JJune 16, 2025). Thennala in Malappuram recorded the extreme category of rainfall with the weather station recording 21 cm of rains in just 24 hours ending at 8.30 a.m. on Monday.

This was followed by Vadakara in Kozhikode which recorded 18 cm of rain, followed by Bayar in Kasaragod (16 cm), and Vythiri in Wayanad, Taliparamba in Kannur, Hosdurg, Kudulu and Muliyar in Kasaragod with 15 cm each.

Following heavy rains that pushed the water levels in many rivers across the State, the State Irrigation Department and the Central Water Commission (CWC) have issued orange and yellow alerts for various rivers, advising people living on the banks of these rivers to be cautious against the rising water levels.

The orange alert has been issued for rivers such as Uppala (Uppala station), Nileshwaram (Chaiyom River station), and Mogral (Madhur station) in Kasaragod, and Manimala (Thondara station) in Pathanamthitta.

A yellow alert has been issued for rivers like Vamanapuram (Mailamoodu Station), and Karamana (Vellaikadavu station- CWC) in Thiruvananthapuram, Pampa (Aranmula station), Achankovil (Kalleli and Konni GD station), Pampa (Madamon station -CWC), and Manimala (Kallooppara station-CWC) in Pathanamthitta,  Karuvannur Puzha (Kurumali and Karuvannur stations) in Thrissur, Korappuzha (Kunnamangalam and Kollikkal stations) in Kozhikode, Perumba (Kaithapram River station), and Kavvai (Vellore River station) in Kannur and Kariangode (Bheemanady station) in Kasaragod.

Meanwhile, rain is likely to continue two more days with India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing a red alert warning of extreme category of rainfall for five districts from Malappuram to Kasaragod and an orange alert for the rest of the State except for Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam and Alappuzha warning of very heavy rains in the next 24 hours.

Apart from heavy rains, gusty winds are also prevailing over the State with Idukki recording a speed of 80 kmph in the last 24 hours ending at 8.30 a.m. on Monday, followed by Kottayam 61 kmph, Wayanad 61 kmph, Kasaragod 60 kmph, and Thiruvananthapuram 57 kmph. The wind also left a trail of destruction across the State. The train services that were disrupted between Kollam and Thiruvananthapuram on Sunday night were fully restored by Monday morning.
