A young couple from Muzaffarnagar, Uttar Pradesh, allegedly died by suicide inside a hotel in Daria on Thursday afternoon, shortly after checking in.
Police said the couple arrived at the hotel around 3 pm, but within an hour, staff discovered them unresponsive in their room. Initial investigation indicates that they consumed poison.
According to police sources, the two had eloped after their families opposed their relationship on account of religious differences. The girl, a minor, had left home with the boy, leading her family to lodge an abduction case at Muzaffarnagar police station.
The Chandigarh Police, upon being informed by hotel staff, reached the spot and shifted the bodies to the mortuary for a postmortem.
As per the police, inquest proceedings have been initiated and the Muzaffarnagar police has been apprised of the development.
