Yet another Gurgaon monsoon tale: Jams and waterlogging aplenty in Millenium City on day of 100+mm rain | Delhi News

National Highway 48, or the Delhi-Jaipur Expressway saw serpentine queues and traffic jams amidst a day of constant downpours in Millenium City.

Even the tony Golf Course Road was not spared earlier in the day from water logging.

To mitigate the situation, Gurgaon Deputy Commissioner Ajay Kumar and Police Commissioner Vikas Arora, along with DCP Traffic Rajesh Mohan, were deputed on the highway to supervise the alleviation of the traffic situation.

Likewise, other DCPs were deputed to supervise traffic regulation in other stretches.

The district saw over 100 mm of rain in some parts between 3 pm and 7 pm on Monday, with Wazirabad tehsil in Gurgaon recording 116 mm between 8 am and 6 pm.

The National Highway jams, though, invited criticism from various quarters after its video went viral online.

Randeep Singh Surjewala, a Congress MP and General Secretary of the Indian National Congress, posted about how it was an alleged failure ora “triple engine” government.

“2 hours of rain = 20 KMs of Gurgaon Jam! As CM Nayab Saini only flies in “State Helicopter” and doesn’t travel on “road”, this is a “helicopter shot” of Highway in Gurgaon just now. So much for the rain preparedness and crores and crores of public money spent on drainage, sewage & easing traffic congestion. This is BJP’s “triple engine model” of Millenium City Urban development – Central Govt-State Govt-Gurgaon Municipal Corporation.”

Suhel Seth, a marketing consultant, said: “Looks like Disneyland is already here. It’s a Mickey Mouse Government.”

Priyanka Chaturvedi, a Rajya Sabha MP from Shiv Sena (UBT) and a vocal opposition leader, stated: “Millennium city Gurugram. A double engine sarkar with a double the failure track record.”

Major General (Dr) Yash Mor, a retired Indian Army veteran and life coach based in the city, wrote: “Gurgaon has been totally chocked. Heavy rains since today afternoon. People are stuck on the roads for hours, almost all important arterial roads are jammed. It’s taking hours to travel just a couple of kms.”

Another bout of heavy rain, meanwhile, began at 11.40 in the city.

The Gurugram Municipal Corporation and the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GDMA) earlier in the day took to social media and stated that deploying workforce to clean drains and road gullies, and suction pumps in key stretches were among steps taken to tackle the situation.

“What is usually a 15–20 minute drive from DLF Phase 5 to my home in sector 31 took me two and a half hours today. Amid the chaos, with ambulances stuck and traffic lights being ignored, what struck me was how ordinary people stepped up to manage traffic and bring some order”, said communications consultant Ishan Mohan, 28.

A PR professional, Ashna Malpe, 27, shared how her first working day in a new city was a day of chaos.

“Today was my first day in office in Gurugram after relocating from Mumbai. While the city witnessed heavy rainfall, I have experienced more intense downpours in Mumbai. What stood out, however, was the extent of disruption — with knee-deep water on the roads causing severe traffic chaos. At one point, it felt as though I was in a boat rather than a car.”
