The purported “final note” and last video of ASI Sandeep Kumar, who was found dead with a gunshot wound on Tuesday, called Haryana-cadre IPS officer Narendra Bijarniya an “honest and upright” officer.
Bijarniya, a 2015-batch officer and Rohtak Superintendent of Police (SP), was among the nine serving and one retired IPS officers and three IAS officers named in the “final note” left behind by IPS officer Y Puran Kumar who allegedly died by suicide on October 6. He was also the first officer to face the Haryana government’s action following Kumar’s death. Bijarniya was transferred out of Rohtak on October 11 and is yet to get a new posting.
Known for his action-oriented fieldwork, Bijarniya was handpicked by the state government in August 2023 when communal clashes erupted in Nuh, claiming seven lives. With his prior experience of working in Nuh for over 15 months, Bijarniya was tasked with maintaining law and order and communal harmony in the district and neighbouring areas.
Hailing from Sikar district of Rajasthan, Bijarniya is the son of a farmer and a homemaker. He worked in the Central Excise and Customs Department from 2011-2014 before clearing the UPSC examination in 2015 and becoming a Haryana-cadre IPS officer. He holds an engineering degree from MNIT, Jaipur.
During his training posting in Sirsa district in 2017, he led a critical joint operation in which gangster Anandpal Singh was killed. The operation, carried out in coordination with Rajasthan’s Special Operations Group (SOG), in Malasar village of Rajasthan’s Churu district resulted in the arrest of Anandpal’s brothers and other gang members.
Bijarniya also worked as SP, Special Task Force, constituted to bust the network of organised crimes in Haryana.
Puran Kumar’s wife, IAS officer Amneet P Kumar, had named DGP Shatrujeet Singh Kapur and Bijarniya in her complaint lodged with the Chandigarh Police and demanded strict action against them. She alleged that the officers “falsely implicated” her husband in a corruption case registered in Rohtak on October 6.
