A new study by the Pew Research Center has shown that the immigrant population of the United States, which had been growing for the last 50 years, has fallen by over a million people after President Donald Trump took office in January for his second tenure and his administration defined illegal immigration as a threat to the nation with severe crackdown against it, The Guardian reported.
According to Pew Research Center’s study, there used to be a record 53.3 million immigrants in the US in January when Trump returned to the White House for the second time. The number of immigrants had dropped to 51.9 million in June, a straight 1.4 million decline in the immigrant population in the country.
Among all the US residents, about 15.8% were immigrants as of January 2025 which was a historic high and the data dropped to 15.4% immigrants in June 2025 after the Trump administration’s serious crackdown on illegal migration and deportation.
The survey by Pew also highlighted that 750,000 immigrant workers had dropped out of the US labour force since January when Trump took oath of office, and the labour force is now 19% foreign born.
Leading the clampdown on illegal immigrants, one of the US agency Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has been carrying out several immigration raids across the country and detaining suspects leading to protests and demonstrations against the Republican government in multiple cities.
The crackdown by the Trump administration on immigrants has shown no sign of stopping as the state department announced this week that it is reviewing the records of 55 million foreign citizens with visas allowing them to visit or reside temporarily in the US for potential revocation.
Indian immigrants hold the second largest group in the US at 3.2 million, or 6% of the total immigrant population, as of mid 2023, the data showed.
