Three workers, including two women, were killed and three others were injured in an explosion at Sri Mariammal Fireworks and Amorces at Narnapuram here on Monday evening.

The deceased were identified as T. Karthik, 25; S. Sangeetha, 42; and G. Lakshmi, 45, all hailing from Muthuramalingapuram Colony at Tiruthangal.

One of the injured, T. Mariammal, 50, mother of Karthik, was admitted to the government hospital at Sivakasi with over 60% burns, the police said.

The other two injured are M. Nagalakshmi and Mariammal, 53. The police said four work sheds were completely destroyed in the blast.

Fire and Rescue Services personnel from Sivakasi rushed to the spot and put out the fire, preventing it from spreading to the other sheds. They also recovered the bodies. The cause of the accident is yet to be established. The Sivakasi East police are investigating.

This is the third such incident in southern Tamil Nadu this month. A similar accident at Gokules Fireworks at Chinnakamanpatti near Sivakasi on July 1 claimed 10 lives.

On July 6, a worker was killed and five others were injured in a blast at Hindustan Fireworks at Keezha Thayilpatti in Virudhunagar district.
