“I think there will be others,” Trump told reporters, adding that he did not have a list of potential targets. He made the remarks as he left the White House for the Ryder Cup golf tournament in New York.
Federal prosecutors in Virginia indicted Comey on Thursday on two counts, accusing him of lying to Congress and obstructing a federal proceeding. The Justice Department’s decision marks a rare move against a former FBI chief and follows the forced resignation of the previous US attorney in the Eastern District of Virginia, who had reportedly resisted pursuing charges against Comey and New York Attorney General Letitia James, another of Trump’s political adversaries.
The criminal case against Comey has now raised concerns about the Justice Department being weaponised against whom Trump perceives as his political enemies.
Following his indictment, Comey released a video statement saying, “My heart is broken for the Department of Justice but I have great confidence in the federal judicial system, and I’m innocent. So let’s have a trial.”
The indictment was filed by the newly appointed US attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, Lindsey Halligan, a White House aide who had been one of Trump’s personal lawyers. Despite lacking experience as a federal prosecutor, she had replaced Erik Siebert, who had not charged Comey over lack of sufficient evidence.
The White House has hailed the indictment as a victory for accountability, while Democrats condemned it as politically motivated. Legal experts, meanwhile, have raised doubts over whether the case against Comey will stand in court.
