TN govt clarifies: ‘55% tax on cooking gas claim false’ – News Today

The Tamil Nadu government has responded to claims circulating on social media that a 55% tax is being imposed on cooking gas (LPG) by the state. Officials say these reports are entirely false.

According to the government’s fact-checking department, the actual tax rate on cooking gas is much lower. Under the GST (Goods & Services Tax) framework, cooking gas is charged 2.5% tax from both the central (Union) and the state governments.

The government emphasised that cooking gas comes under the GST regime. The claim of a 55% tax has no basis, and they asked people not to spread rumours.
