The report by the Bengaluru-based National Law School of India University and the Queen Mary University of London, to be formally released, called for an urgent, fundamental rethinking of the legal structures governing citizenship in India given the possibility of an Assam-like exercise to update the National Register of Citizens (NRC) across the country.
Thailand says open to ‘dialogue’ with Cambodia to end conflict
U.S. President Donald Trump said that the leaders of Cambodia and Thailand had agreed to meet immediately to quickly work out a ceasefire, as he sought to broker peace after three days of fighting along their border. Thailand’s acting Prime Minister, Phumtham Wechayachai, thanked Trump and said Thailand “agrees in principle to have a ceasefire in place” but “would like to see sincere intention from the Cambodian side.”
Defending need for SIR in the Supreme Court, Election Commission cites parties’ complaints about voter list errors
Defending its decision to conduct a Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of Bihar’s electoral rolls in the Supreme Court, the Election Commission of India pointed to the numerous complaints made by political parties about the inaccuracy of voter lists. “[I]n response, and to restore public confidence in the integrity of the electoral roll, the Commission has initiated the SIR,” it told the court in a counter-affidavit filed on July 21. The Commission even submitted copies of these complaints in an annexure to the affidavit, running into 625 pages. The annexure includes complaints made by the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) before the Delhi Assembly polls, and by the Congress and its allies about alleged additions made to voter lists during the Maharashtra Assembly polls last year, as well as by the BJP, AIADMK, and Shiv Sena.

The petition challenging the in-house inquiry procedure & the subsequent recommendation of then Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna, for his removal from office, in connection with the allegation that the half-burnt currency was found in his residential premises in Delhi on the intervening night of March 14-15.

The study said that journalists from small cities and towns, or those who reported for local publications, in Hindi or other regional languages, were most impacted, and their cases often did not receive national or international media attention.

Kolkata law college to deploy ex-Army men for security after gang rape of student on campus
South Calcutta Law College, where a student was allegedly gang-raped last month, has decided to deploy Army veterans for campus security, an official said. The private security guards will no longer be retained, and former Army personnel will be deployed to ensure that the security of the campus is foolproof, she said. Monojit Mishra, a former student of the college and a contractual staffer, is the prime accused in the rape case. He was also a leader of the ruling TMC’s students’ wing.

Scheduled Tribe panel notice to Rajasthan government over school roof collapse deaths
The National Commission for Scheduled Tribes (NCST) issued notices to authorities in the Rajasthan government following the collapse of a government school roof in Jhalawar district, which claimed the lives of seven children and left dozens injured. The Asia Cup men’s T20 tournament will be played from September 9 to 28 in the United Arab Emirates. India and Pakistan are likely to face each other thrice, with the first confirmed match to be played on September 14 in Dubai. Mohsin Naqvi, the Asian Cricket Council, confirmed the window and the venue of the tournament, to be hosted by the Board of Control for Cricket in India at a neutral venue, in a social media post. The ACC then announced the detailed fixtures on Saturday (July 26, 2025). The eight-team tournament will witness two groups of four teams each. While India, Pakistan, UAE and Oman are clubbed together in Group A, Group B comprises Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan and Hong Kong. The tournament will be played in Dubai and Abu Dhabi.
