A 15-year-old student at the Telangana Social Welfare Residential School (Girls) Parkal in Warangal rural district was declared dead after she reportedly attempted to end her own life.
The Class 10 student is said to have gone out to use the washroom during class at around 1 p.m. and did not return. She was later found in the washroom by sweepers and other children.
The girl was rushed to the Parkal Area Hospital in an autorickshaw engaged by the school staff, and she was declared dead at the hospital.
School officials, who spoke to The Hindu, said the girl was studious and had been with the institute since Class 6.
Parents allege harassment by teachers
According to Parkal police inspector V. Kranthi Kumar, a case was registered for investigation under BNS 107 (Abetment of suicide of child or person of unsound mind).
“Her father, Eshwar, a lorry driver, alleged harassment by teachers in his complaint. He says there was no sufficient reason for her to end her life. He said that she was not new to the school, and it’s not even a month since the school started functioning,” the officer said.
Mr. Kumar said that no note was left behind by the girl and incidents of alleged depression were being looked into. He added that the girl’s mother had also ended her life in a similar way several years ago. Her stepmother is a homemaker, and her brother is a student in Parkal.
Letters to her mother and the photo frame
According to sources in the residential school, two days before the girl’s extreme step, her houseparent found a framed picture of a boy in her possession. It was said that the girl identified him as her brother.
The school authorities confiscated the framed photo, reported the incident to the family, and asked them to visit the school’s officer. However, the parents did not turn up.
Reportedly, the girl also kept a small diary, and it contained thoughts about her deceased mother.
A divisional school officer on condition of anonymity, confirmed the presence of the two items and said they were handed over to the police.
“The girl used to call the houseparent amma. She was a bright student. From the diary, it seems that she was depressed,” this official said.
