SAD, Cong, BJP question raid; AAP says, ‘vigilance has got enough proof’

SAD, Cong, BJP question raid; AAP says, ‘vigilance has got enough proof’

Following the raid and the subsequent arrest at senior Akali leader Bikram Singh Majithia’s Amritsar residence, SAD president Sukhbir Singh Badal said that the party firmly stands by Majithia
The former deputy CM also described the “action against him as a politically motivated move by the AAP government”.

“The SAD stands like a rock with Majithia. It is clear that Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and his government are deeply rattled by Majithia’s bold and outspoken exposure of their corrupt and dark dealings,” Badal said in a statement.

He accused the state government of misusing the state agencies to suppress the voices of Majithia and other Akali leaders who are raising public issues. “This is not the first time that the Akali leadership has faced politically motivated actions. Such incidents have been occurring repeatedly, and we have always faced them head-on and will continue to do so,” he said.

Calling the registration of false cases a criminal act, he warned officials that all such actions carried out during the AAP government’s tenure would be subject to investigation at an appropriate time. “I appeal to police personnel to act within the framework of law, as only about a year and a half is left for this government,” Badal added.

State BJP chief Sunil Jakhar, meanwhile, stressed that action against corruption must be transparent, uniform, and rooted in due process, not driven by personal or political vendetta. “Law must take its course — firmly and without favour. No one is above the law, and justice must prevail. But when institutions are used to selectively target individuals while others walk free, it erodes the credibility of both justice and governance,” Jakhar said, adding that one cannot be persecuted merely for challenging the CM, just as one cannot be let off for succumbing to the CM’s threats.

Union minister Ravneet Singh Bittu also hit out at Bhagwant Mann, accusing him of turning the case against Majithia into a political spectacle. He alleged that repeated arrests without credible evidence were weakening the legal case against Majithia.

Condemning the raid, Congress MLA Sukhpal Singh Khaira termed the arrest of Majithia “vindictive” action against the Akali leader. “Registering false cases is a criminal act. Officers should know that inquiries into all such false cases and acts of suppression committed during this govt’s tenure will surely be conducted at the appropriate time. I urge the police personnel not to break the law, as the change of guard is just one-and-a-half years away,” he said.

Leader of opposition Partap Singh Bajwa slammed the arrest, saying, “I strongly condemn the arrest of @bsmajithia — both in the manner it violates democratic principles and exposes the dictatorial mindset behind it.”

Punjab Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema, meanwhile, said the state government is waging a war against drugs and no individual is above the law.

“Punjab is witnessing an unprecedented war against drugs. This government is fighting a battle against those who, for decades, profited from the drug trade under the Akali-BJP and Congress regimes. No matter how influential a person is, if they are involved in drug-related activities, they will face the law,” Cheema said.

Punjab Cabinet minister Kuldeep Singh Dhaliwal added that the mobile phones, iPads and crucial documents seized were under investigation for potential links to a Rs 500-crore drug money scandal. “It is drug money. The VB has enough evidence to prove that. The AAP led government will not spare anyone. Action against big fish has just started.”

Dhaliwal stated, “Our government, led by CM Bhagwant Mann and guided by AAP National Convener Arvind Kejriwal, is determined to rid Punjab of drugs. This fight will continue until Punjab is completely drug-free.”

Dhaliwal also highlighted the deep-rooted issue of drug proliferation during the 10-year regime of the SAD-BJP alliance (2007–2017), describing it as a period when “sixth river of drugs” was said to flow in Punjab. He reminded the public of testimonies such as that of notorious drug smuggler Jagdish Bhola, who named Majithia in court in 2013. Despite these revelations, successive governments failed to take action, even as lives were devastated by the drug crisis.

He further criticized the Congress government under former CM Captain Amarinder Singh, accusing it of inaction despite campaign promises. “Captain Amarinder Singh took an oath on the Gutka Sahib to eliminate drugs, but instead, the people of Punjab witnessed five years of a ‘Chacha-Bhatija’ (uncle-nephew) alliance between Captain Amarinder and Majithia,” Dhaliwal remarked.
