A batch of Railway Protection Special Force (RPSF) personnel from Ujjain in Madhya Pradesh will support the Railway Protection Force (RPF) of Tiruchi Railway Division in carrying out security duties.
A total of 56 personnel attached to RPSF 15th Battalion, who landed here on Saturday, have been accommodated at the RPF Zonal Training Centre at Khajamalai in Tiruchi. Some more RPSF personnel from the same Battalion are expected to arrive in Tiruchi in the coming days to assist and support the Railway Protection Force (RPF) personnel of Tiruchi Division in performing security duties in view of the manpower constraints faced by the division.
The move to send a batch of 80 RPSF personnel from Ujjain falling under the Western Railway zone to Tiruchi Division came in the wake of a request from the RPF authorities which was accepted by the Railway Board.
Railway sources said the RPSF personnel with arms would be deployed for tasks that include providing escort on board express trains when they pass through the limits of the Tiruchi Railway Division to ensure safety and security of passengers. Several express trains in the north-south direction and east-west directions in Tamil Nadu pass through Tiruchi Division’s jurisdiction every day.
Sources said the RPSF personnel would be deployed for platform security duty at select stations and guarding railway property. The move is aimed at checking crimes inside the trains and on platforms which includes theft of passenger belongings that have been reported at different intervals.
The RPF has been carrying out train escort duty on board express trains that pass through limits of the Tiruchi Division besides providing security on platforms and station circulating areas.
One of the RPSF teams has been deployed at the busy Tiruchi Junction, which is one of the major stations in the Southern Railway zone. The RPSF personnel have been deployed at the station’s main entrance, circulating area, and on platforms in an effort to step up vigil, the sources added.
