Rajya Sabha passes resolution to extend President’s rule in Manipur – News Today

The Rajya Sabha cleared a statutory resolution on Tuesday (August 5, 2025) extending President’s rule in Manipur for another six months. The Lok Sabha had passed the resolution last week.

The resolution was passed amid protests by Opposition members who were demanding a discussion on the special intensive revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar.

Minister of State for Home Affairs Nityanand Rai moved the resolution in the Upper House and said a rift was created between two communities in Manipur due to an order of the High Court related to a dispute on reservation. “Those who say it is religious violence are wrong,” Mr. Rai said. He added that Union Home Minister Amit Shah had held discussions on the matter with top officials, representatives of the security forces and civil society members in the State. Mr. Rai said that the State had witnessed only one incident of violence since the imposition of President’s rule.
