Princess Kate debuted a striking new silver brooch during the naming ceremony of HMS Glasgow in Scotland.
The Princess of Wales, who serves as Lady Sponsor of the vessel, wore the bespoke piece for the first time at the event held at BAE Systems’ shipyard in Scotstoun, on the banks of the River Clyde.
The HMS Glasgow Brooch was designed by James Porter & Son Diamonds, a Glaswegian jewellery company established in 1858.
The design draws inspiration from Scotland, featuring a thistle frame that pays tribute to both the nation and Catherine’s love of nature.

The piece also depicts St Mungo, Glasgow’s patron saint otherwise known Kentigern, beneath the HMS Glasgow’s crest, whilst a crown at the top symbolises heritage and honour.
Simon Porter, the jewellers’ fifth generation managing director, expressed his delight at seeing the Princess wearing their creation.
“It was an absolute honour to see her wearing it,” he told reporters. “Against a plain navy background, it really stood out.”
The company also shared on Instagram: “It has been a true privilege to create such a meaningful piece for our future Queen, and we hope it will be treasured for generations to come.”

For the event, the Princess wore a tailored navy and white outfit designed by Suzannah London, a label she has favoured for previous engagements.
She complemented the nautical-themed ensemble with a hat by Philip Treacy, one of her preferred milliners for official occasions.
The brooch was prominently displayed on her lapel, adding a meaningful touch to her sleek maritime look.
The brooch was commissioned by two London livery companies: The Worshipful Company of Fan Makers and The Worshipful Company of Merchant Taylors.

These organisations have long-standing connections with the military, particularly the Royal Navy, and often contribute to ceremonial elements.
Their involvement in funding the piece further connects the design to British tradition and heritage.
The Princess carried out the traditional whisky-smashing ceremony, officially naming the vessel with the words: “I have the pleasure to name this ship HMS Glasgow; may God bless her and all who sail on her.”
This marked Kate’s first time officially naming a Royal Navy vessel, though she has previously led other naming ceremonies, including a lifeboat in 2011 and the Royal Princess cruise ship in 2013.
Kate was appointed Sponsor of HMS Glasgow in June 2021 at the request of the late Queen Elizabeth II.

The vessel is one of eight Type 26 anti-submarine frigates and represents one of the Royal Navy’s most advanced warships.
It has been built to protect the UK’s nuclear deterrent and aircraft carriers, highlighting its strategic importance to national defence.
Prince William, who accompanied Kate to the ceremony, was also recently in Scotland to mark a new collaboration between The Royal Foundation and Street Soccer Scotland.
While touring’s Leith’s community centre, William was seen playing football with some of Street Soccer’s coaches and players – some of whom have experienced homelessness.
The royal was pictured beaming as he appeared to score a goal.
