Princess Eugenie made a revelation about her 20-year battle with scoliosis whilst appearing on the ‘Lessons From Our Mothers’ podcast, leading to her older sister Beatrice becoming visibly emotional.
The royal, 35, opened up about her health struggles and the crucial role her mother, Sarah Ferguson, played in helping her embrace her condition.
Speaking alongside her sister Princess Beatrice, Eugenie shared how she was diagnosed with scoliosis, an abnormal curvature of the spine, when she was just 12 years old.
The condition was so severe that she required a major operation, marking the beginning of a journey that would eventually lead to a powerful moment of self-acceptance.

During her hospitalisation, Eugenie revealed how her mother was constantly by her side.
“I had scoliosis when I was younger. I have scoliosis and I had a big operation when I was 12. Which my mum basically moved into the hospital with me and was there every waking hour,” she shared on the podcast.
The Duchess of York’s dedication was unwavering throughout the ordeal.
“If I was ever in pain, she was right by my bedside,” Eugenie continued.

The princess acknowledged that this is an experience many parents go through when their children face health challenges.
Her mother’s presence provided crucial comfort during this difficult time.
The operation left Eugenie with a significant scar down her back, which initially caused her distress.
“As a 12-year-old little girl, I had a big scar halfway down my back, and I was terrified of it, I was ashamed. I didn’t know what it was, I was so young,” she confessed.

However, her mother’s attitude transformed her perspective.
“And she used to be so proud of me and my scar and what I’d been through, that if people were ever talking about it, she would turn me around and she would show them my scar.”
This maternal pride gradually helped Eugenie see her scar not as a source of shame, but as a badge of courage.
Fergie’s impact was so profound that it influenced one of the most significant moments in Eugenie’s life.

“It led to me feeling so confident that on my wedding day, I wore a dress that showed my scar to the world because I was like ‘This is the coolest thing ever’ because my mum had retrained my brain by her behaviour,” she explained.
Princess Beatrice, 36, visibly became emotional after Eugenie opened up about her health struggles.
The princess chose a wedding gown with a low back for her 2018 marriage to Jack Brooksbank, deliberately showcasing her scar.
This powerful statement of self-acceptance was a direct result of her mother’s unwavering support and positive reinforcement throughout her journey.
