Both houses of the Indian Parliament, the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha, experienced multiple adjournments today, the inaugural day of the Monsoon Session, as opposition members created a ruckus demanding discussions on pressing national issues.
Opposition members, particularly from the Congress and INDIA bloc, sought a detailed discussion on the recent terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu & Kashmir, and the subsequent “Operation Sindoor,” which the government stated achieved 100% of its objectives.
There were also demands for clarification regarding President Donald Trump’s repeated claims of having mediated a ceasefire between India and Pakistan following “Operation Sindoor,” with the opposition questioning whether this violates the Shimla Agreement.
Concerns were raised in the Rajya Sabha regarding passenger safety following a recent Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad.
The opposition also sought a discussion on the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar, alleging that it threatens voting rights.
In the Lok Sabha, Speaker Om Birla initially adjourned proceedings until 12 PM and later until 2 PM amidst continuous sloganeering by opposition MPs who rushed into the well of the House. Speaker Birla appealed for decorum, stating that the government was ready to discuss all issues after the Question Hour, and that members would be given appropriate time.
Similarly, the Rajya Sabha also witnessed adjournments until noon and then again until 2 PM, as opposition’s adjournment motions on various issues were declined by Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar, leading to protests.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, addressing the media before the session began, hailed “Operation Sindoor” as a “victory celebration” and spoke of India’s increasing military power and its rising stature on the global stage. He also highlighted India’s progress in the economic sector and the shrinking footprint of Naxalism.
