The Panchkula police has arrested a key accused in a major cyber fraud case involving cheating of nearly Rs 1.5 crore with a local cloth trader.

According to the police, the case dates back to October 10, 2024, when Somesh Mittal (43), a resident of Sector 21 Panchkula and owner of a clothing business in Zirakpur, filed a complaint at the Cyber Crime Police Station. Mittal alleged that in November 2023, he was lured through the messaging platform Telegram with promises of high profits in trading. He was persuaded to download an application, and between November 2023 and March 2024, he was duped of about Rs 1.5 crore. When he became suspicious and tried to contact the operators, the phone numbers were found switched off.

Panchkula DCP (Crime) Manpreet Singh Sudan said that during the past year, the police conducted multiple raids, but the accused managed to evade arrest each time. However, acting on technical leads and with persistent efforts, a team of Cyber Crime tracked down the suspect.
