A 30-year-old man was arrested last Friday for allegedly strangling his wife after beating her with a rolling pin in front of her children from a previous marriage in West Delhi’s Nihal Vihar area.
According to the Delhi Police, the landlord of the first-floor apartment where the suspect, Sant Kumar, a mason, lived with the woman and her children, came to the house on June 1, and noticed a foul smell. They said Kumar, a mason, married Sangeeta on March 19 this year.
“He opened the apartment gate and found a woman lying in an unconscious state. He made the PCR call. When the police reached the spot, they found the woman lying on the floor, with injuries on her chest and hands,” said Sachin Sharma, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Outer).
The woman was then taken to the hospital, where she was declared dead upon arrival.
The police said they found during the investigation that the woman lived with Kumar, and her two sons, aged 6 years and 4 years, from a previous marriage. “Her first husband died. Then she married the accused earlier this year,” a police officer said.
The police then questioned the parents of the woman, who arrived on June 5 after being informed about their daughter’s death. “They told the police that her husband is a mason. Using CCTV footage and their statements, we were able to track the accused on Friday. He was living near his place of work with the two children,” a police officer said.
During interrogation, Kumar allegedly told the police that he suspected his wife of infidelity, and argued with her frequently. During one such argument on the morning of May 31, Kumar beat his wife with a rolling pin and strangled her. “During the assault, he gagged the children with a cloth to stop them from making any noise. He then left her body there, and took the children to another location,” Sharma said.

Data given by the Delhi Police shows that 107 cases of murder were reported between January 1 and March 31, 2025, a slight uptick from 105 in 2024 during the same period, but lower than 2023, when it was 115. Attempt to murder cases, though, went down by 17.24 per cent to 168 as compared to 203 in 2024, according to the data.
