He continued: “For more years than I care to remember, England fans have sung that famous chant ‘football’s coming home’.

“As you return home with the trophy you won at Wembley three years ago, it is a source of great pride that, through sporting skill and awesome teamwork, the Lionesses have made those words ring true,” the King celebrated.

“For this, you have my whole family’s warmest appreciation and admiration.

“More than that, though, you have shown through your example over past weeks that there are no setbacks so tough that defeat cannot be transformed into victory, even as the final whistle looms.

“Well done, Lionesses. The next task is to bring home the World Cup in 2027 if you possibly can!”

His majesty signed off the message with his “Charles R” signature, signifying the emotional congratulations were directly from him.

The Prince of Wales and Princess Charlotte were in attendance at the St Jakob-Park stadium for the tense contest that was dramatically settled with a nail biting penalty shootout.

Charlotte’s presence was a royal first for the 10-year-old Princess, who has not publicly accompanied her father to a football game previously.

She and William witnessed Spain open the scoring during the match with a strike from Mariona Caldentey in the 25th minute.

The Lionesses came out for the second half still 1-0 down but came roaring back with a header from Alessia Russo, assisted by Chloe Kelly, in the 57th minute.

The nail-biting game remained deadlocked for the remainder of the second half and through extra time leading a dreaded penalty shootout.

Beth Mead, who was up first to take a shot, was dramatically forced to retake her shot which was then saved.

Congratulations to our valiant @Lionesses! 🦁🦁🦁
