There is no doubt that the Indian Premier League is a globally loved franchise tournament and has entertained the fans for the last 17 years. The tournament is played in the T20 format which at that time in 2008 was a fairly new format for the cricketing world.
There have now been some other new formats that have been introduced to the fans, and one of them is the 100-ball format, which was started in 2021 by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), also featuring certain star international cricketers. This format gained interest from fans since there were some interesting rules, which made them curious. Certain rules of this format are very much different from the regular T20s.
The format has its ups and downs, and there is still a long way to go for this tournament to gain the same level of attraction as the IPL. However, it will be interesting to think what would have happened if the IPL, instead of following the T20 format, had followed the 100-ball format. Let’s delve into the pros and cons if it happened.
Advantages and Disadvantages if the IPL followed the 100-ball format:
Advantages
1. The new rules will add some curiosity: Certain rule changes could add curiosity among the fans. The rules, such as the 10-ball overs, where there is a 50-50 chance for either the batter or bowler to come back. The ends of the batter and bowler will change after 10 balls instead of after every six-ball over as well. These rules can lead to a good amount of drama and excitement.
2. The game gets quicker and exciting: The reason behind what made the T20 format interesting is that it is a fast-paced game filled with a lot of big hits. The 100-ball format is much faster-paced and can give the fans another exciting tournament.
3. Might showcase the prowess of finishers: The role of finishers will be bigger in the 100-ball format with it being a fast-moving game. This could be a chance for the big hitters or finishers to showcase their talent and prove their match-winning ability.

Disadvantages
1. The new rules have their limitations: Though these rules seem interesting when we hear them, they have their limitations that could frustrate the fans as well. The 10-ball overs in the game could move the game even slower in case of any extras, and the addition of the two-run no balls makes it even tougher for the bowlers. The ends changing after 10 deliveries is also something that will be a huge advantage for the batters who will already know the shorter or longer side and plan according to it.
2. Lack of high individual and team scores: The IPL has some big stars who can score loads of runs in the matches, which leads to some high individual scores, which the fans enjoy. With the 100-ball game being shorter, it could result in the fans not witnessing innings like that. The excitement of huge totals can also be destroyed because of this.
3. Players will take time to get used to the format: The IPL is a platform which also promotes talent and with every new format it takes time for players to get used to it. This could also lead to some talented players to miss out and also affect their confidence.
Conclusion
Though the IPL shifting from T20 to 100-ball format might lead to some exciting changes within the tournament in the end the new rules might affect the chances of some players who are still getting used to the format. The T20 format is still getting a lot of viewership than the Hundred and it will be a big risk to change it.
