A landslide caused a part of a rural road connecting Santrampur in Mahisagar district to the Mangadh Hill to be washed away late on Saturday night, following heavy rainfall. The incident also involved a car slipping into the valley as a patch of about 100 meters of the winding road slipped in Bhamri-Kunda village area of Santrampur.
As per officials of the Roads and Buildings department, no casualties were reported in the landslide and three passengers, who were travelling in the car that fell into the valley, were rescued “unharmed”. Officials said that the road passes through the Mangadh Hill and is used mostly by tourists on the weekends to travel to Mangadh — the sacred and historic site for tribal communities in memory of Bhil freedom fighters martyred in the Mangadh massacre.
DK Gadhvi, Deputy Engineer of the Roads and Buildings Department of Santrampur, told The Indian Express that the road is under the jurisdiction of the local Public Works Department of the District Panchayat. Gadhvi said, “There are two routes that go to Mangadh Hill. Since the Bhamri-Kunda road has been washed away due to a landslide, we have diverted the traffic from the second road which passes through Kunda village, about two kilometers from the spot. The damaged road has been closed from both ends.”
Gadhvi said that heavy rainfall last week led to the landslide. “The road is about 35 years old and further course of action will be decided after the rains subside… We will undertake a survey to find a permanent solution to the problem,” he said.
Truck stranded in pothole near SoU
Roads leading to the Statue of Unity (SoU) in Ekta Nagar from Rajpipla have been ridden with potholes and craters, following heavy rainfall in Narmada district last week. On Sunday, a truck was stuck in a pothole while travelling from Ekta Nagar to Rajpipla near Zunda village.
The incident came just days after a two-wheeler slipped on the potholed road, causing injuries to the motorcyclist.
