1. Bengaluru stampede: Karnataka government admits before High Court lack of preparation to handle crowd of 2.5 lakh

Karnataka government on June 5, 2025, admitted before the High Court of Karnataka that it did not prepare to handle such a huge crowd of around 2.5 lakh on June 4 during the event organised at M. Chinnaswamy stadium in Bengaluru to celebrate RCB’s victory in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025, which witnessed stampede resulting in death of 11 persons and injuring 56 others.

This information was given to a division bench, which took suo motu cognisance of the incident. The Government told the Bench that it had deployed around 1,600 police personnel, which is double the number of police personnel deployed during any cricket match in and around the the stadium, which has the capacity to accommodate only 34,600 persons.

In the wake of the tragedy, Karnataka government announced that it would formulate a new Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for mega events, meetings and celebrations aimed at preventing any untoward incidents in the future, State Home Minister G. 2. No FIR on stampede deaths during RCB victory parade in Bengaluru, police file 11 UDRs

In a move that has raised eyebrows, Bengaluru City Police have not registered any First Information Report (FIR) regarding the stampede at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium that killed 11 people and left 47 injured on June 4. Instead, the police have filed 11 separate Unnatural Death Reports (UDRs). 

The jurisdictional court has to be informed within 24 hours of registration of an FIR. The court has to be updated on all further developments in the investigation in the case. But, in the case of a UDR, there is no criminal investigation, and the jurisdictional tehsildar will monitor the probe. 

3. RCB announces ₹10 lakh for families of stampede victims

A day after 11 people lost their lives and over 50 were injured in the Royal Challengers Bengaluru victory parade stampede, the IPL franchise announced financial support of ₹10 lakh each for the families of the victims. The management also said a fund called RCB Cares is being created to support fans injured in the incident.

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has also announced a compensation of ₹10 lakh each to the families of the deceased and free treatment to the injured persons. The Karnataka State Cricket Association, meanwhile, announced ₹5 lakh compensation to families of the deceased.

4. Bengaluru’s leopard count rises, beats Mumbai to become the ‘leopard capital’

A year-long camera-trap survey by Holématthi Nature Foundation, led by conservation biologist Dr. Sanjay Gubbi, has revealed that the forests and scrublands fringing Bengaluru harbour an estimated 80–85 wild leopards. Dr. Gubbi was joined by Shravan Suthar, Sandesh Appu Naik, Poornesha H.C., Mayur Mirashi, Aishwarya Karanth and field assistants from local communities.

With this, Bengaluru now surpasses Mumbai’s documented population of around 54 leopards and becomes the large metropolis with the highest known number of free-ranging big cats, according to a statement by the Foundation. It is also the only metro whose fringes still support an ensemble of tigers, leopards, dholes, elephants, gaur, sambar and other large mammals.

5. Bengaluru-Mangaluru National Highway blocked by protesters near Solur

Traffic movement on Bengaluru -Mangaluru National Highway was disrupted near Solur on June 5 as hundreds of farmers from Magadi area in Ramanagara district took out a protest march seeking implementation of Hemavathy Express Link project.

The project seeks to provide Hemavathy river water from near Gubbi in Tumakuru district to water-starved areas in Ramanagara. While farmers of Tumakuru are opposing it fearing water shortage, farmers in Ramanagara are demanding early implementation.
