Heavy monsoon rains Lash Tamil Nadu, Alerts issued – News Today

A well-marked Low Pressure area over the southeast Arabian Sea is expected to intensify into a depression, bringing heavy rains to Tamil Nadu.

The North East Monsoon has already caused heavy showers across several districts, including Chennai and its neighboring regions.

Following this, the Meteorological Department has issued Red Alerts for five districts and Orange Alerts for more than ten districts over the coming days, forecasting severe rainfall due to two active weather systems over the Bay of Bengal.

Chennai and the neighboring districts of Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur, and Chengalpattu are under Red Alert for October 23-24, anticipating extremely heavy rainfall.

Flood warnings have been issued for residents living near riverbanks and low-lying areas, with authorities evacuating vulnerable populations to safe locations and government relief camps.

Waterlogging and transport disruptions have heavily impacted daily life.

The Met office further cautioned fishermen about squally conditions along the Tamil Nadu coast and Gulf of Mannar, with very rough seas expected through October 25.

Winds could gust up to 70 kmph, urging fishermen not to venture into these sea areas.
