Health Minister M. Subramanian drew attention on Thursday after inspecting the ongoing efforts to clear sand deposits at the Adyar river mouth and reviewing the ambitious ₹1,500-crore restoration project for the stretch between Thiru VI Ka Bridge and Saidapet.Speaking to reporters, the minister said a tender had already been floated for the massive undertaking, which includes riverbank strengthening and riverfront development works. He added that construction of 1,701 tenements at Nagi Reddy Thottam would soon begin to resettle residents from vulnerable areas such as Jothiammal Nagar.
Explaining the project’s flood mitigation component, the minister said steps were underway to reduce flood risks along low-lying riverbank zones. Dredging of the Adyar river mouth would continue till the end of the year, enabling the smooth drainage of around 40,000 cubic feet per second of floodwater during heavy rains, he noted.
Meanwhile, in Chennai, the Municipal Water Department (MWD) managed an additional load of 825.47 million litres of sewage on Thursday — a sharp increase from the usual daily load of 650–690 million litres. To tackle waterlogging and sewage overflow during the recent heavy rains, as many as 91 sewer lorries were deployed for spot clearance operations.
Officials said the ongoing works are part of a broader push to integrate flood control with urban regeneration along the Adyar River corridor.
