Gaglioppo is a red grape variety native to Calabria in southern Italy, considered one of the oldest in the region. Thriving in the sun-drenched hills near the Ionian coast, it plays a central role in the production of Cirò, Calabria’s most well-known wine. Gaglioppo produces structured, rustic reds with firm tannins and moderate acidity, reflecting the Mediterranean terroir. It is well-suited for aging and increasingly used in modern, refined winemaking styles.
Flavor
Gaglioppo wines are typically medium- to full-bodied with flavors of dried cherry, plum, and pomegranate, accompanied by earthy, herbal, and spicy notes. With age, they develop nuances of tobacco, leather, and dried flowers.
Food Pairing
Gaglioppo pairs well with grilled lamb, braised meats, eggplant parmigiana, and hard cheeses. Its tannic structure and savory profile also make it a good match for hearty Southern Italian dishes.
