Chennai’s Velachery–Perungudi Stretch to Open for Weekend Fitness Activities – News Today

The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has announced that a 3km stretch between Velachery and Perungudi will be opened for residents to walk, cycle, and skate during weekends. The initiative is part of a ₹15 crore restoration project aimed at reviving the long-neglected road.

The stretch, abandoned by the Railways in 1995, had remained unused for nearly three decades due to encroachments, sewage stagnation, poor lighting, and overgrown vegetation. GCC took charge of the area in 2024 and carried out restoration works including road relaying, median repairs, pavement construction, and installation of streetlights. Most of the work has now been completed, and the road is expected to open within two weeks.

GCC Commissioner J. Kumaragurubaran said police permission has been sought to close the road to traffic during weekends. Initially, it will be closed for three hours in the morning, with the possibility of extension based on public response.

Residents have requested additional arrangements such as proper parking facilities and restrictions on hawkers to ensure smooth use of the road for recreational activities. The initiative is aimed at promoting fitness and creating a safe public space for the community.
