A shocking incident of molestation and assault has come to light in Mohali, where a cab driver allegedly misbehaved with a young girl, threatened to kill her, snatched her phone, and even attempted to run her over with his vehicle. The Sohana police, which had earlier registered an FIR against the unidentified driver, has now arrested the accused, identified as Bhagwan Dass, a resident of Rupnagar.
According to the complaint, a girl residing in a paying guest (PG) house in Sector 94 told the police that around 10:21 pm on the night of August 18, she booked a bike taxi from a mall in Sector 67 to her PG accommodation. However, a car driver arrived instead. When she objected, the driver said he operated both bike and cab services and assured her of a “safe drop”. Trusting him, she boarded the cab.
The complainant told the police, “When we reached near my PG, he suddenly jumped from the front seat to the back and grabbed both my hands. He kept trying to force himself on me. When I screamed, he put the car key on my neck and threatened to kill me if I made a noise.” She managed to push him away with her leg, opened the door, and leapt out of the moving car. The driver, however, snatched her iPhone 15.
Tried to divert and run over victim
The girl said that the cab driver initially tried to take her through a deserted, dark route. “He said it was a shortcut, but I insisted he follow the app’s route. He finally agreed, but just before reaching my PG, he stopped two lanes earlier and began arguing,” she recalled.
After escaping, when she attempted to note down the car’s number, the accused tried to run her over. “He accelerated the car towards me, but I moved aside in time,” she said. Terrified, she ran towards her PG while screaming for help. A society guard rushed to her aid, after which she immediately informed the police control room.
