The bond forged between the farmers of Punjab and Haryana during the 2020–21 agitation against the three contentious farm laws has now blossomed into a wave of solidarity, as residents of Haryana rally to support flood-hit Punjab villages.

Rajesh Kunger, a farmer from Kunger village in Bhiwani, shared that announcements are being made across villages urging people to donate generously. “From our village, we initially plan to send nearly 150 quintals of wheat, Rs 1 lakh in cash and fodder for the animals. We will hand it over to a gurdwara or the Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM) to ensure it reaches those in need.”

Kunger recalled how people from Punjab rushed to help when Ghaggar river in Haryana was flooded in 2024. “Now it’s our turn to support them. Everyone is ready to contribute. Even poor labourers are giving what they can to send ration to Punjab.”

Inspiring the entire region, Azad Palwa, a farmer leader from Uchana Kalan in Jind (Haryana), said Ujhana village had recently sent 60 quintals of wheat and other essentials to Punjab. “After Ujhana’s initiative, announcements are now being made in nearly every village, urging people to contribute with open hearts.”

With a growing sentiment of compassion, Haryana’s villages are acknowledging Punjab’s deep-rooted tradition of langar and humanitarian aid. Palwa said, “The langar culture of Punjab has always impressed us. We witnessed it during the farmer agitation of 2020–21. Since then, people in Haryana have increasingly started contributing to langars themselves.”

Khap leaders and farmer unions are also actively encouraging people to come forward to help.

Palwa also said, “Earlier, some politicians tried to pit Punjab and Haryana against each other over the SYL (Sutlej-Yamuna Link) canal issue… But the agitation brought farmers from both states closer, prompting them to stand by each other in difficult times.”

BJP national secretary and former Haryana minister Om Prakash Dhankar said, “It has always been part of Haryana’s culture to offer help in times of dire need to neighbouring states. Our ties have been close with Punjab for generations and that’s why we now rush to support our neighbours.”
