It is a variety of the Hua Niu (Chinese Red Delicious variety) apple and originates from Tibet’s mountainous regions. Its dark coloration comes from high-altitude growth, where intense ultraviolet (UV) radiation stimulates the production of anthocyanins, antioxidant pigments. These apples grow in the Nyingchi region of Tibet at elevations between 9,000 and 12,000 feet, benefiting from cold nights and sunny days that contribute to their unique appearance and flavor. The trees take about eight years to bear fruit, making these apples rare and highly valued.
The Black Diamond apple is sweet and crisp with a slight tartness that enhances its flavor, while the flesh is typically white or cream-colored, resembling other Red Delicious apples. Nutritionally, it is low in calories, with a medium-sized apple containing around 80 calories.
