Police detain 36 ‘illegal’ Bangladeshi nationals, initiate deportation process

The Delhi Police has recently apprehended 36 “illegal” Bangladeshi nationals from south Delhi’s Bharat Nagar, said an official on Monday. The police have also initiated the deportation process.

The immigrants, including 19 adults and 17 children, were detained on June 13.

According to the police, they were living without valid documents, visas or permits in violation of the Foreigners Act, of 1946.

“It is during the interrogation that one of the detainees confessed that they had entered India from Bangladesh via land and then helped us identify the rest of the people illegally living in the area,” said a senior official.

“Thirteen identity cards of the Bangladeshi nationals and seven mobile phones loaded with the banned IMO app, often used for cross-border communication, were recovered from their possession,” said DCP (North West) Bhisham Singh.

“They were mostly living in makeshift houses that usually do not require legal backing or documentation,” he said, adding that the deportation process has been initiated.

According to the police, the group had previously worked at a brick kiln in Haryana’s Mewat and fled the region fearing police action there and they temporarily settled on footpaths in Delhi, frequently changing locations in an attempt to avoid detection.
