Shreyas Iyer abuses Shashank Singh after sealing win over Mumbai Indians in QF-2

Punjab Kings (PBKS) rushed into their first IPL final in 11 years, thanks to captain Shreyas Iyer’s stellar performance in the chase against Mumbai Indians in the Qualifier 2 on Sunday night. Despite the team producing a historic chase, Iyer’s post-match outburst at teammate Shashank Singh grabbed immense eyeballs.

Chasing a huge target of 204 in the ticket to the final game at the Narendra Modi Stadium, PBKS were in a tricky situation at one point. However, their skipper pulled through with an unbeaten 87 off just 41 balls, laced with five fours and eight sixes.

His performance saw PBKS complete the highest-ever successful run chase against MI in IPL history, securing a spot in the summit clash against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB). However, Iyer’s frustration at Shashank came during the customary post-match handshake. A video of the incident quickly went viral, showing Iyer abusing and refusing to engage with Shashank.

Shreyas Iyer becomes first-ever captain to take three different franchises to an IPL final

The root of his anger came from a moment in the 17th over of the run chase. With PBKS requiring 35 runs from 21 balls and still having six wickets in hand, the team was in a decent position. But Shashank, who had just arrived at the crease, was run out for two off three deliveries due to lazy running between the wickets.

Facing a low full toss from Trent Boult, the right-handed batter drove the ball to mid-on and ran for a single. Hardik Pandya’s position at mid-on produced a direct hit at the non-striker’s end, catching the batter short of the crease. Replays revealed the 33-year-old was jogging initially and only picked up pace later, costing him his wicket.

The dismissal handed MI a sudden opening, especially with Jasprit Bumrah still having one over left. Despite the dismissal, Iyer held on to one end brilliantly and took his team over the line. He also became the first-ever captain to take three different franchises to an IPL final.
