
An inquiry has been ordered into the alleged assault on an IRS officer by a colleague in Lucknow on Thursday.
Gaurav Garg, a 2016-batch IRS officer who is currently posted at the Income Tax Department’s office in the city, is undergoing treatment at a hospital, where doctors described his condition as stable. He had injuries on the face and head. No FIR was filed over the incident till filing of the report.
Lucknow Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Ashish Srivastava said Garg informed the police about the attack on him on Thursday. A police team was immediately rushed to the spot.
Legal action is being taken in the matter, he added.
According to sources, the incident took place following an argument between Garg and his colleague at the office over some pending inquiry. The situation escalated and Garg was allegedly attacked and injured. The matter was eventually brought under control with the intervention of others present at the scene.
Garg was taken to hospital in ambulance for treatment. He is married to an IPS officer.
Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav wrote on X, “During the BJP government, there were earlier cases of police clashing with police—now it’s officers fighting among themselves.”
