Power supply to several city areas was hit on Friday night after rainfall accompanied by strong wind

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had placed Thiruvananthapuram on red alert in a Nowcast valid for three hours from 8 p.m. on Friday. The IMD had warned of heavy rainfall with strong surface winds with speeds likely to touch 50 kmph in isolated locations. The alert level was scaled down a few hours later. The district is on yellow alert for isolated heavy rainfall on Saturday.

With rainfall expected to strengthen over Kerala over the next few days, the IMD has placed a number of districts on red alert for extremely heavy rainfall and several others on orange and yellow alerts for isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall.

Kannur and Kasaragod districts are on red alert on Saturday for extremely heavy rainfall, according to a Friday night weather forecast update from the IMD. Wayanad, Kozhikode, Malappuram, Palakkad, Thrissur, Idukki, Ernakulam, Kottayam and Pathanamthitta are on orange alert for isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall on Saturday. Alappuzha, Kollam and Thiruvananthapuram are on yellow alert for isolated heavy rainfall.

As per the 9 p.m. update, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod are on red alert on Sunday. These districts plus Idukki and Pathanamthitta are on red alert on Monday. The IMD is expected to update the forecasts on Saturday morning. A red alert indicates heavy to extremely heavy rainfall of over 20 cm in 24 hours, an orange alert means very heavy rain between 11 cm and 20 cm, and a yellow alert indicates heavy rainfall between 6 cm and 11 cm.

The IMD also warned of strong winds along the coastal and interior areas, advising people, including fishermen, to take precautionary measures. Meanwhile, the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) reported the possibility of high waves up to 3.5 metres at various coastal locations on Saturday.
