When Lord Rama told Sita to stay back and not come with Him to the forest, She said that even if She were given a chance to be in heaven, She would reject it, if it meant being away from Him. Finally, Rama agreed to take Sita with Him. In the Ramayana, we find that whenever Sita was beside Rama, He did not kill anyone, said M.A. Venkatakrishnan in a discourse. Even when someone deserved to be killed, Rama spared the person’s life, if Sita was beside Him. When Viswamitra took Rama to the forest to protect his Vedic altar, he told Rama to kill Tataka. And Rama killed the demoness. At this time, Rama was not married. When Rama, Lakshmana and Sita were in the forest, Viradha confronted them and carried away Rama and Lakshmana. Sita screamed in fear when she saw Rama and Lakshmana being carried away. The asura was killed. So although Rama was married at the time of this killing, Sita and He were not together, when Viradha was killed.
When Soorpanakha was chased away, after Lakshmana cut off her nose and ears, she complained to Khara, and he sent asuras to kill Rama. Rama asked Lakshmana to guard Sita, while He dealt with the asura forces. Rama killed all the asuras sent by Khara. So here again, Sita was not with Him when he killed the asuras. Rama chased Maricha, who was in the form of a golden deer. He was far away from the place where Sita was, and so He killed Maricha. Rama did not kill Soorpanakha, although she threatened Sita. That again was because Sita was with Him. Kakasura pecked at Sita’s breast and the wound bled. But Kakasura’s life too was spared because of Sita’s presence. Ravana abducted Sita and kept Her imprisoned. The advice of Vibhishana to release Sita was ignored, and eventually Ravana was killed. We are saved from God’s wrath by the mercy of His Consort.
