On Sunday, the Vanniyar Youth Conference, organized by the Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK), expressed strong criticism toward the Tamil Nadu government for its continued delay in implementing internal reservations for the Vanniyar community under the Other Backward Classes (OBC) category. The conference highlighted that it has been over 1,100 days since the Supreme Court permitted internal reservations based on collected data, yet the state government has not acted on this directive.
The conference passed 14 resolutions, one of which condemned the state government’s inaction, stating that it undermines social justice. Additionally, the conference urged the government to increase the reservation for Scheduled Castes (SC) from 18% to 20%, aligning with the 2011 census data.
Further demands included conducting a separate caste-based survey in Tamil Nadu to protect the existing 69% reservation framework and advocating for the removal of the overall reservation cap following a national caste census. The conference also called for the elimination of the ‘creamy layer’ concept in OBC reservations and sought reservation provisions in private sector employment and judicial appointments.
