Vasna barrage maintenance work underway, Sabarmati Riverfront to run dry till June 5 | Ahmedabad News


Due to repair and maintenance work on gates at the Vasna barrage, the Sabarmati Riverfront will run dry from Monday till June 5, the Sabarmati Riverfront Development Corporation Limited (SRFDCL) stated on Sunday.

As per the directions of Ahmedabad Irrigation Department, Narmada Water Resources and Kalpasar Department, SRFDCL has decided to release the water from Vasna barrage due to pre-monsoon repair and maintenance work, a senior official at the corporation said.

“This is not the first time the river will go dry; the last time it happened was around five years ago,” the official added.

The repair work, which began on Saturday, will be carried out till June 5. The barrage, which has around 30 gates, usually goes for pre-monsoon repair work on an annual basis.

Besides, with work on constructing an earthen ramp upstream of Vasna Barrage being underway, Sabarmati river is required to be completely emptied out. The work on this started on Saturday.

Festive offer

The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) and SRFDCL will undertake the work of cleaning the riverbed. SRFDCL, in a statement, said the  cleaning work will be undertaken through public participation.
