Trent Alexander-Arnold leaves for Real Madrid

Updated: 5 May 2025 10:35 pm

Trent Alexander-Arnold announced that he is leaving Liverpool at the end of the season, when his contract concludes on June 30, 2025. Alexander-Arnold, who has been with the club since he was six, is rumoured to join Real Madrid.

The 26-year-old took to X, in a statement he tweeted: “After 20 years at Liverpool Football Club, now is the time for me to confirm that I will be leaving at the end of the season.

“This is easily the hardest decision I’ve ever made in my life.

“I know many of you have wondered why or been frustrated that I haven’t spoken about this yet, but it was always my intention to keep my full focus on the team’s best interests, which was securing No.20.”

Since his debut in 2016, the Liverpool defender has made 352 appearances, provided 86 assists, and scored 23 goals. With Liverpool, he has won the Premier League twice, once under Jurgen Klopp in the 2019/20 season and again under Arne Slot this Season (2024/25).

Alexander-Arnold will be remembered as one of Liverpool’s greats, and there is no doubt about it, but fans of the Scouse club are not happy with his decision to leave, with most fans taking to X to comment:

leaving your childhood club on a free is absolutely despicable

Owen 2.0, don’t come twerking when Madrid boo you out of the club, from hero to zero well done mate

This is why you will never be Steven Gerrard and you will walk alone.

However, the comments aren’t all bad, with others in support of his decision to move forward and progress:

As a Red! Thank you for everything I wish you all the best at Real Madrid & I hope you go there & smash it with Bellingham. Go & win another UCL lad

What fans are mostly complaining about is that Trent leaving for free.

OH PLEASE, EVEN IF TRENT LEAVES FOR €100M TO MADRID, YOU’D ALL STILL REACT THE SAME WAY 😭 You’d still be mad, act like he never did anything for the club, call him a snake like you did with Coutinho or…

Trent Alexander-Arnolds Legacy

His legacy is etched into the club’s modern history, not only through silverware but also through his transformative influence as a right-back. A product of the Liverpool academy, the Scouse-born defender captained both the U16 and U18 teams as a midfielder before breaking into the first team under Klopp.

He has played a pivotal role in one of Liverpool’s most successful eras with two Premier League titles, a UEFA Super Cup, FIFA Club World Cup, FA Cup, and League Cup to his name. He holds the record for the most assists by a Premier League defender and has become a symbol of Liverpool’s tactical evolution under Klopp.

Although Liverpool fans have perceived his decision to leave as his downfall, there is no denying that the 26-year-old has a lot to offer, even if he is leaving as a free agent. He has inspired many and will continue to inspire many. He has given his all, and the fans will move on from his supposed ‘betrayal’.

“I’ve given my all every single day I’ve been at this club, and I hope that you feel like I’ve given back to you during my time here.

“From the bottom of my heart, I thank everybody – my coaches, my managers, my teammates, the staff and our incredible supporters – for the last 20 years.

“I’ve been blessed enough to live out my dreams here and I will never, ever take for granted the special moments I’ve been fortunate enough to have lived through with you all. My love for this club will never die.”
