BCCI gets notice from Delhi High Court on changing AI robot’s name

BCCI has invited trouble on itself over a potential trademark infringement. The Delhi High Court has issued the Indian cricket board a legal notice over naming the AI robot ‘Champak’. The popular children’s comic magazine, Champak, has complained to the BCCI of trademark infringement. The Delhi High Court has demanded the BCCI to respond to Champak’s allegations.

The Delhi High Court has ordered the BCCI to give its explanation on the issue with a written statement and summary within a month. The upcoming hearing of the case has been scheduled to take place on July 9. Delhi Press, the publisher of the magazine, has filed the case against the Indian Cricket Board for a potential trademark violation.

The AI robot was officially introduced in the IPL during the match between Mumbai Indians and Delhi Capitals in thr 29th match of the 2025 edition. The official handle of the league took to social media and posted a video of its unveiling, which caught the attention of fans, players, and everyone else.

Everything to know about BCCI’s AI robot, ‘Champak’

Commentators and players got a chance to interact with the unique robot, which resembled the body of a dog and was flexible enough. While many loved the idea of having a robot in the broadcasting team, many wondered why the name of the AI robot was Champak.

Some of the players, such as Hardik Pandya, MS Dhoni, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohammed Siraj, and others, interacted with the robot, and their videos were shared on social media platforms. Likewise, the commentators and the members of the broadcasting team like Danny Morrison, Pommie Mbangwa, and others interacted with it.

The case between the BCCI and the Delhi Press could heat up in the next few months, as the magazine Champak has been a household name for years. The BCCI might have a hard time winning the case, as the board has to defend itself against an established magazine.
