King Charles and Queen Camilla to lead VE Day 2025 celebrations, Buckingham Palace confirms

The Royal Family has announced plans to commemorate the 80th Anniversary of VE Day with a series of events beginning on May 5.

King Charles and Queen Camilla will lead the commemorations, joined by other senior royals including Prince William and Princess Kate.

The celebrations, which honour the millions who served in the Second World War across the UK and Commonwealth, will mark eight decades since the end of the Second World War in Europe.

Events will span several days and include a military procession, flypast, tea party for veterans, and a special Service of Thanksgiving at Westminster Abbey.

The royal commemorations will also feature a display of ceramic poppies at the Tower of London and conclude with a celebratory concert at Horse Guards Parade.

Veterans from the Royal British Legion will participate in several of the planned events alongside the Royal Family.

On May 5, the King and Queen will join other royals and the Prime Minister at the Queen Victoria Memorial to observe military units processing down The Mall.

Following the parade, the Royal Family will appear on the Buckingham Palace balcony to watch a flypast, while veterans view from the palace gardens.

Later that day, Their Majesties will host a Tea Party for veterans and members of the Second World War generation.

On May 6, around 50 veterans will be welcomed to Buckingham Palace, where the Marble Corridor will be decorated with bunting made from recycled fabrics from Royal estates.

The Queen will view a new display of nearly 30,000 ceramic poppies at the Tower of London on May 8, arranged to resemble a ‘wound’ reflecting wartime sacrifices.

The King and Queen, alongside other senior royals, will attend a Service of Thanksgiving at Westminster Abbey on May 8.

The Prime Minister will give a reading during the service commemorating the sacrifice of the Second World War generation.

The day will conclude with a celebratory concert at Horse Guards Parade, presented by Zoe Ball.

Other royals will represent the King at Liberation anniversaries abroad, with the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester visiting Denmark on May 4th and the Princess Royal and Sir Tim Laurence set to travel to the Channel Islands from May 9th to 10th to mark the 80th anniversary of the Liberation of Guernsey and Sark.
