Temporary sanitation workers’ welfare help desks launched by Chennai Corporation

Chennai Mayor R. Priya on Wednesday inaugurated help desks for temporary sanitation workers. They have been set up with the support of the Tamil Nadu Sanitation Workers Welfare Board at all 15 zonal offices of the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC).

The help desks would assist all categories of sanitation workers, including those working with the GCC and those outsourced from firms and organisations such as the National Urban Livelihood Mission (NULM).

Identity cards and information booklets were also distributed to registered members of the Board, a release said.

A total of 35,286 sanitation workers, including 17,659 temporary workers and 17,627 workers engaged in regular and irregular sewage-related work, would receive welfare board identity cards. A total of 12,273 workers had received their cards so far, it added.

The help desk would offer assistance for issues pertaining to accident insurance, death and funeral, pensions, marriage and maternity benefits, among others. The GCC-employed sanitation workers were being given skill training, safety gear, and other support through the Tamil Nadu Urban Sanitation Support Programme, the release added.
