About 20% of the accused in POCSO cases are minors (below 18 years of age), and in 80% of these cases, the accused are below 23 years of age, said Home Minister V. Anitha here.

Speaking at an awareness programme on POCSO, Nirbhaya and NDPS Acts for college students at the VMRDA Children’s Arena at Siripuram here on Thursday, Ms. Anitha said that lack of awareness and knowledge about the cases and laws is one of the reasons for the increase in the number of crimes, especially against women. Unfortunately, minors are getting involved in cases against women and in laws like POCSO and NDPS, she said.

She advised the youth not to spoil their careers by getting attracted towards ganja or ‘love’ during their academic life.

Andhra University Vice-Chancellor G.P. Raja Sekhar and Police Commissioner Shanka Brata Bagchi spoke.
