A Delhi Police patrolling van rammed into a tea stall in Central Delhi’s Mandir Marg area, leaving one person dead early Thursday. The man killed in the accident has been identified as Gangaram Tiwari, who used to run the tea stall on the pavement, and sleep inside it.
According to the police, they suspect the driver of the patrolling vehicle dozed off when the accident took place near R K Ashram Metro station.
A senior police officer said the constable driving the vehicle was deployed in the PCR New Delhi Circle.
“The cause of the incident is yet to be ascertained. But prima facie it appears that the constable lost balance out of the vehicle while taking a turn, and it climbed onto the pavement, crashing into the tea stall,” the officer said.
The constable has been taken into custody, and the vehicle has been seized. “We are trying to reach out to the family members of Tiwari to inform them about the incident,” the officer said.
A video of the accident shows the PCR van in front of the tea stall, as several people argue with the police personnel who reached the accident spot.
The police said they are continuing to investigate the matter.
