A trip to Diu turned tragic after three engineering students — two from Andhra Pradesh and one from Telangana — of R K University in Gujarat’s Rajkot, died after their car with overturned at Jangvad village on the Rajkot-Bhavnagar highway, early on Saturday.
There were 12 students in the 7-seater car that allegedly lost control while taking a sharp turn at Jangvad village on Rajkot-Bhavnagar Highway, the police said.
The police said that the car was driven by Saiyed Afrid, 17, of Andhra Pradesh, who died on the spot, while the two other students — Naresh Kodavati, 17, of Andhra Pradesh and Methi Harsha, 17, of Telangana — died in the hospital.
Five other students were injured and two of them who suffered multiple fractures have been hospitalised, said officers at the Atkot police station who rushed to the spot soon after the accident.
The police said that all the 12 teen boys were students of the Computer Science Department of R K University and were staying in the college hostel. Some of them were in the first and third semesters of the course.
“The students took permission from the warden to go to Amreli and Dwarka in a car. These students hired a self-drive car from a private tours and travel office in Rajkot. All these students left the hostel campus on Friday night,” Vijaysinh Gurjar, Rajkot District Superintendent of Police, told The Indian Express.
The officer said that the police would register an offence over reckless driving.
